Self -pity

I never saw a wild thing sorry for itself.
A small bird will drop frozen dead from a bough
without ever having felt sorry for itself.
~D.H.Lawrence.

as much as this poem attracts you, as much as it confuses you.
Does the author refer that only humans, of all animals have the ability of self-pity?
It is true that Humans express self-pity cause they always tend to look back To their past, mistakes, failures etc...
and that's what prevent them from living the moment like animals do.
but i guess that the author was referring here to natural way of surviving. he was comparing man to animal.
The animal instincts in man to overcome injury, or hurt or even death...and not to feel sorry for himself.
it's really a beautiful Poem and Lawrence was the best example for he never felt sorry for himself or let self-pity conquers his soul despite his illness and pain....
